The words “Amazon Rainforest" can conjure an image of big bulldozers destroying thousands of trees. 20% of the rainforest has already been demolished to create farming ground, create biofuels and wood. This is the wrong way of making use of the forest according to Meindert Brouwer, writer of the book Amazon Your Business. In his point of view we should export sustainable products from the remaining 80% to ensure a long term sustainable future for the people whose livelihoods depend on the forest.
These sustainable products can be anything from energy drinks and cosmetics to gold jewelry, food supplements and brazil nuts. The only way you can guarantee sustainability, is by checking the product from the source until it ends up in the store.
It’s important that the locals change their ways of thinking about the rainforest. They have to see the importance of sustainability and that you also can make money in a good way. But even more important is that multinationals make this change. They only care about making profit so if you show them you can make the same money in a good way, they might make the switch to the production of sustainable export products. The raised awareness of consumers might push as well a bit, because they want to be able to buy “fair” products.
